Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia is committed to the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (“DEIA”).  We aim to realize these values both within our own work environment and in how we interact with the communities we serve.  Our work impacts individual lives and our collective confidence in the fair administration of justice.  We are stronger, more effective, and better able to achieve just outcomes when our Office reflects our nation’s broad diversity of backgrounds, experiences, cultures, and circumstances.  

The Office has a DEIA Committee comprised of attorneys and support staff that promotes diversity and inclusion within the work environment.  The DEIA Committee focuses particular attention on recruiting diverse applicants for employment, retaining a diverse workforce, promoting transparency in decisions that affect workplace diversity, and nurturing a culture of inclusion within the Office.  Through Special Emphasis Month celebrations and other programs, the Office recognizes and appreciates the myriad races, cultures, and identities that enrich our workforce.

The Office also strives to treat all members of the public with whom we come into contact fairly, equally, and respectfully, irrespective of race, color, gender, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, marital status, politics, gender identity, disability, age, or socioeconomic status.  Further, the Office encourages its employees to participate in community events that focus on diversity, inclusion, and awareness.

The Office has established a Committee on Race in Prosecution and Policing (CORPP) made up of attorneys and support staff to address instances of police brutality; biases, implicit and explicit, in policing and prosecuting Black/African-American people and other communities of color; and other issues relating to the intersection of race and law enforcement.  Assistant United States Attorneys Stephen Anthony, Rebecca Gant, and Carla Jordan-Detamore serve as CORPP’s coordinators.
