Deputy Assistant Attorney General

Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General

David Newman is the Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for National Security. In that role, he helps lead the Department of Justice’s mission to combat terrorism, espionage, cyber-crime, foreign malign influence, and other threats to the national security. He previously served as the Associate Deputy Attorney General. Earlier in his career, David served as Associate White House Counsel and Special Assistant to the President in the Office of the White House Counsel, in various posts on the staff of the National Security Council, and as Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General for National Security.

Eun Young Choi was appointed on July 24, 2023 as the Deputy Assistant Attorney General in an acting capacity overseeing the National Security Division’s ongoing efforts to counter hostile nation states, enforce sanctions and export controls, combat foreign malign influence, and mitigate foreign investment risks.

Melissa MacTough serves as the Deputy Assistant Attorney General directing the National Security Division’s work to review the necessary legal authorities and exercise oversight for Intelligence Community operations, as well as support litigation efforts related to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

George Toscas serves as the Deputy Assistant Attorney General guiding the National Security Division’s work designing, implementing, and supporting law enforcement efforts, legislative initiatives, policies, and strategies relating to combating international and domestic terrorism.

Brad Wiegmann serves as the Deputy Assistant Attorney General spearheading the National Security Division’s efforts to develop and implement Department of Justice policies relating to intelligence, counterterrorism, and other national security matters, as well as provide legal assistance and advice on matters of national security law.

Chief of Staff and Senior Counsel

Brett Freedman serves as Chief of Staff and Senior Counsel for the National Security Division overseeing a staff consisting of over four hundred attorneys and support staff across the Division.  Previously, Brett served as General Counsel to Senator Mark Warner, Chairman of the Senate Select Committee as well as stints in the counsel’s office of the National Counterterrorism Center within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and as an Attorney-Advisor in the National Security Agency's Office of General Counsel.
