Marty J. Jackley
United States Attorney

On May 18, 2006, Marty J. Jackley was nominated by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the Senate on July 21, 2006, as United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota. He acts as South Dakota’s chief federal criminal prosecutor and represents the United States in civil cases where the government is a party to the lawsuit. Marty serves on both the US Attorney General's Advisory Counsel for Controlled Substance Subcommittee and Native American Subcommittee.

Marty was born in Deadwood and raised in Sturgis, South Dakota. He resides in Sioux Falls with his wife, Angela, and their son and daughter. He received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with Honors from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1992. He received his law degree from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 1995.

From 1995-97, Marty served as a law clerk for then-Chief Judge Richard H. Battey in federal district court in Rapid City. Before taking office as U.S. Attorney, Marty was a partner in the Rapid City law firm of Gunderson, Palmer, Goodsell, and Nelson, LLP. His practice areas focused primarily on criminal law, construction/engineering law, Indian law, water law, and business litigation. Marty has served as a Special Assistant Attorney General for South Dakota in Butte, Custer, Fall River, and Meade counties prosecuting primarily controlled substance felonies. He has extensive jury trial experience involving homicide, assault, sex offenses, controlled substance, and white collar offenses.

Marty has served as Chairman of the S.D. State Criminal Jury Pattern Instruction Committee, which works with prosecutors, defense counsel, and judges in the continued development of pattern jury instructions for use in courtrooms across South Dakota. He has also served on the State Bar Indian Law and Criminal Law Committees. He is licensed to practice law in the United States Supreme Court, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Federal District Court in South Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota State Courts, and Oglala Sioux Tribal Court.
