Dana J. Boente

Dana J. Boente was named Acting Assistant Attorney General of the National Security Division on April 28, 2017.  Prior to his current appointment, Boente served as Acting Deputy Attorney General of the United States from February 9 to April 26, 2017, and as Acting Attorney General of the United States from January 30 to February 9, 2017.  In 2015, Boente was nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA).

Boente is a more than 30-year veteran of the Department of Justice, and has spent his entire professional career in public service. In 1984, Boente joined the Tax Division’s Criminal Section as part of the Attorney General’s Honors Program and in January 2001, became an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Fraud Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA). He was detailed back to the Tax Division in August 2005 to serve as the Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General.  Boente returned to EDVA when he was selected as the First Assistant U.S. Attorney in May 2007, and later served as the U.S. Attorney for EDVA from October 2008 through September 2009.  In December 2012, Boente was appointed to serve as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana, a position he held until September 2013, when he returned to EDVA as the Acting U.S. Attorney.
